Virginia M. Seekings, affectionately known as "Danka", 29, of Dunkirk, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at Rochester General Hospital, following an extended illness. Born in Dunkirk on July 22, 1996, she was the daughter of Johanna Cortes.

A lifelong resident of Dunkirk, Virginia graduated from Dunkirk High School in 2013. Recently, she was working on earning a degree in web design and photography from Jamestown Community College.

Virginia’s nickname, “Danka,” was endearingly given to her by her niece, Marianna, highlighting the special bond they shared.

Virginia had a remarkable ability to light up any room she entered. She cherished spending time with her family, with whom she created countless beautiful memories. The holidays were especially dear to her heart; they were times of joy and togetherness that she eagerly anticipated each year.

Beyond her love for family, Virginia was known for her tremendous affection for dogs, embodying kindness and compassion in everything she did. Her big heart was matched only by her warrior-like resilience; despite facing various physical ailments throughout her life, Virginia exhibited an admirable toughness. In a testament to her fighting spirit, she had “Too tough to die” tattooed on her leg—a reflection of her indomitable will and positive attitude.

Virginia enjoyed a plethora of hobbies and interests that showcased her vibrant personality. She was not only passionate about painting and baking but also took joy in shopping and doing things for others, selflessly always thinking of those around her. Her adventurous spirit found outlets in activities like karate and bowling. Additionally, Virginia was an avid collector of Star Wars memorabilia. She played the role as the part-time IT technician in her household, showcasing her knack for technology and problem-solving.

Virginia is survived by her loving mother Johanna Cortes; brother Carlos Mendez; Elliona Ocasio, mother of her nieces Marianna and Sophia Mendez; grandparents Wendy Forrester and William Cortes, Jr.; her aunt Gwen Cortes and uncle Robert Fortenberry. She is also survived by many cousins, close friends and her beloved canine companions Hank and Millie. She is now with Paco; her life long canine who previously passed.
