Robert A. Mitchell, 87, of Dunkirk, passed away suddenly Wednesday evening, July 23, 2025 at home. Born in Boston, MA, on August 31, 1937, he was the husband of the late Jacqueline (Baumgardt) Mitchell and son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Foote) Mitchell.

Robert had a distinguished career as the Plant Manager of the Sewer and Water Treatment Department for the City of Dunkirk. His expertise extended into education, as he taught classes at Fredonia State University and several other universities, sharing his vast knowledge and passion for biochemistry, which he earned a Doctorate degree in.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Robert was a man who deeply valued the connections he nurtured with his family. He imparted to them the true meaning of family and loyalty. His spirit resonated with kindness and integrity; he was always willing to stand up for what was right, embodying the principles of respect and responsibility that he instilled in those around him.

Robert's love for life was reflected in his many interests and hobbies. He relished in nature's beauty, finding joy in the simple moments spent outdoors. He was an avid target shooter and a passionate chess player, often engaged in friendly matches with friends and family alike. Additionally, Robert enjoyed motorcycle riding, and he was a fan of the Buffalo Bills.

Robert is survived by his loving children James Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, David (Cathy Fisher) Malinowski, William "Bill" (Kristina Smith) Malinowski, John (Jenny) Malinowski, and Dr. Thomas (Trisha) Mitchell; grandchildren Allison Mitchell, Joel and Jessa Malinowski, Jackson and Ben Mitchell, Zuleyka, Shakira and Johnathn Soto-Vega, Natasha Malinowski and Kiara Ortiz; 9 great-grandchildren and his brother David (Barbara) Mitchell. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline (Baumgardt) Mitchell, sisters Barbara LaRouche and Judith Mitchell and infant twins Charles and Edward.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY. Interment will be held in private.
