Richard "Byrd" Travis, 78, of Portland, NY, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side following a long 17 year courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Born in Dunkirk on December 10, 1947, he was the husband of Beverly (Richardson) Travis and son of the late William and Esther (Wolnik) Travis.
A graduate of Brocton High School in 1966, he went on to serve honorably from 1967-1970 in the United States Army during the Vietnam war as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
Following his military service, Byrd devoted 37 years to Purina, where he worked as a forklift operator. Those who knew him at Purina admired his tremendous work ethic, a quality that he carried with pride throughout his career.
Byrd was a man of generous spirit and open heart, qualities that endeared him to all who met him. Byrd had a remarkable ability to talk to anyone, making friends wherever he went. He cherished spending time with his family and, above all, with his grandchildren — moments that brought him immense joy and fulfillment. He often spoke of his sons with great pride, considering them among his life’s most significant accomplishments.
Beyond his family and work, Byrd’s passions were many. He cared deeply for his lawn, finding satisfaction in its upkeep and beauty. Barn sales and antiquing were among his favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed watching football, the History channel and cooking shows.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 434.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Beverly (Richardson) Travis, whom he married on April 14, 1973. Loving sons Ryan (Beth) Travis and Brooks (Tiffany) Travis; grandchildren Bryson, Harper, Georgianna, Benjamin, and Eloise Travis; siblings Charlotte (late Bernard) McCorry and Steven (Kathy) Travis. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Michael Travis and brother-in-law Bernard McCorry.
Funeral services will be held in private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by R. Michael Mackowiak III; McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made in Byrd's memory to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation; 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306. Proceeds go to providing mortgage-free homes to families of fallen veterans and first responders, building specially adapted "smart homes" for severely injured veterans, and eradicating veteran homelessness.
