Mary Elizabeth (Schweda) Miller was reunited with the love of her life, Ronald "Pudge" Miller, on November 18, 2025. Anyone that knew her knows she is back alongside Pudge, critiquing and censoring his jokes once again.
Born on October 17, 1938, to the late Frederick and Jane (Frey) Schweda, Mary left this world the way she lived most of her life: surrounded by love, and finishing her last sip of coffee. She was a formidable force of nature (or as Pudge would lovingly put it: “a whirling dervish”) who loved wholeheartedly and lived life to the fullest.
During their 63-year marriage, Mary and Pudge perfected the art of the loving squabble while raising their four children, William (Julie) Miller of Winchester, VA; Susan (Thomas) Kaminski of Middletown DE; James (Shirlene) Miller of Fredonia; and John (Lisa) Miller of Clayton, NC. They learned early on that "Because I said so" was an entirely valid reason and the end of further discussion, but they also knew she always had their best interests at heart. Mary adored her 10 grandchildren and was overjoyed when each of her seven great-grandchildren were born. She would light up whenever she saw the little ones.
Mary’s profound connection to her community was one of her defining traits allowing her to always know the happenings in Dunkirk. This remarkable ability was no accident; it was honed through years of working at key community hubs. From her early days at Loblaws, to managing the bustling Brooks Canteen, and later, through her positions at The Evening Observer and Liberty National Bank, Mary served the community with dedication and a smile. A member of the Dunkirk High School Class of 1957, she was a member of reunion committees throughout the years. Mary was also involved in many community organizations: Dunkirk Babe Ruth, Dunkirk Elks Club, Dunkirk Irish Society, the WNY Alumni Drum Corps, and the Rubbermaid Brigade. She could also be found working at the election booths, whether it was for the local school board or national election.
Mary is deeply missed, but her family is comforted to have their parents back together again, as they should be.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to: Willowbrook Park Cemetery c/o Douglas Keith, PO BOX 491, Dunkirk, NY 14048.
