Leonard F. Kupkowski, 60, of Lancaster, formerly of Dunkirk died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon (Jan. 12, 2023) at home.
He was born Aug. 14, 1962 in Buffalo, the son of the late Leonard F. and Marilyn A. (Albrecht) Kupkowski.
A resident of Dunkirk for most of his life, Leonard was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, class of 1980. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1980-1984 and the NY Army National Guard from 1986 – 1995.
Leonard served for 25 years as a Member of East Dunkirk Fire Department and was currently a member of the Village of Lancaster Fire Department. He was a certified NYS EMT for over 30 years and a former member of the Chautauqua County Hazmat Team and the Fredonia Fire Department. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dunkirk.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Jennifer M. Whittington; his sister, Mari Ellen (Ginger) Swebjka; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins. His brothers and sisters in Fire Fighting, his friends and colleagues will remember his passion for serving others, for sharing his knowledge and for leaving a lasting impression. Leonard found joy in brewing beer, fishing, camping, his dog Coco and spending time with family and friends.
Calling hours will be held Friday, Jan. 20, from 4-7 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 733 Central Ave., Dunkirk. A memorial service will be held immediately after the calling hours at 7 p.m. Pastor Zoe Milliman will officiate. Full Military Honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John’s UCC, East Dunkirk Fire Department or Lancaster Fire Department. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
