John P. Woloszyn (Uncle John) was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War and a retired Dunkirk Professional Firefighter who passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026.John was born September 8, 1928, to the late Angeline and Peter Woloszyn.

Woloszyn served as Quarter Master Petty Officer 2nd Class for the Navigation Department aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) from 1948-1952 with the 6th and 7t Fleet Battle Group. He was awarded two Battle Stars for the Asian Korean Campaign and a Good Conduct Ribbon. John went on to serve as a Professional Firefighter for the city of Dunkirk for 35 years. He retired in 1987 and remained an active member of the Local 616. He was instrumental in creating the position of Fire Lieutenant within the Dunkirk Fire Department.

John was a member of Blessed Mary Angela Parish of St. Hyacinth where he once served as an usher for 20 years. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge 922, American Legion Post 62, World War II Vets, First Ward Falcon Club, Moniuszko Club, Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club, and Polish Union of America #132. John was a past member of the Cherry Creek Sno-Goers Club where he would ride with his nephews Patrick and David Mleczko locally and in Canada. In his spare time, John liked to hunt for fox and deer. He also took great pride in his beautiful flower gardens.

John was preceded in death by his parents Angeline and Peter Woloszyn, his wife, Nancy (Mleczko) Woloszyn of 68 years, brothers Thaddeus, Matthew, Albin, Raymond, Chester, and Norman Woloszyn, nephews David, Dennis, Brian Woloszyn, and niece Diane Woloszyn.

John is survived by his godchild and caregiver Karla (Joe) Strefeler and great nieces Rylee and Emersyn. He is also survived by his brother Daniel Woloszyn, niece Jen Ellman, nephews Jimmy, Ronnie, Matt Jr., Peter (Ann), Mike (Holly Ann), Richie (Melanie), Danny Jr. (Kim), Tom (Karen) Woloszyn, and Patrick (Patti, Michael (Lori), Tom (Dana), David (Patricia), and Keith Mleczko. Along with several other nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews. A special thank you to Michelle Miller, Janet Powers, and Nancy Ortiz for their time, care, and love given to Uncle John.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Thursday, January 29, 2026 from 4-7 p.m. at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Blessed Mary Angela Roman Catholic Church of St. Hyacinth; 295 Lake Shore Drive E., Dunkirk, NY. Military Honors will be held by the Dunkirk Joint Veteran Council immediately following the Mass. Interment will be held in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery. Arrangements are by R. Michael Mackowiak III; McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
