James P. Schmidt

James P. Schmidt, 85, of Dunkirk, passed away on October 19, 2025 following a short illness. Jim was born at home on July 7, 1940 to Peter and Bernice Schmidt. Jim was one of five children: Ron, Norm, Carol, and Linda (Clark).

Jim was the husband of the late Carolyn Schmidt. He was also preceded by his daughter, Jennifer Schmidt, and step daughter Stella Karin. He is survived by his children Jeff (Wanda) Cushman, Kirk (Suzanne), Garth, and step-children Debbie (Doug) Richardson, Jimmy (Nicole) Drozdiel, and Sonja Drozdiel and his niece, Colleen Schmidt and nephews Lee, Steven and Kevin Schmidt. Jim is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jim served for five years in the Navy as a ship fitter on the U.S.S. Boston. He then worked for Dunkirk Specialty Steel until his retirement. Jim and Carolyn were members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. For fun, Jim enjoyed motorcycle trips, fishing and an annual canoe trip with extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held in private. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Ave., Dunkirk, NY.
