Helen Jane Falco

The family of Helen Jane (Houghtaling) Falco is deeply saddened to announce her peaceful passing on September 20, 2026. Born on November 27, 1947, in Dunkirk, NY, she was a beloved daughter of the late John and Gertrude (Feser) Houghtaling and a proud graduate of Dunkirk High School, Class of 1965.

A lifelong resident of Dunkirk, Helen held various positions across the community over the years—including working at the Capitol Theatre, New York Telephone, US News, Quality Markets, and serving as a crossing guard for the City of Dunkirk. However, she was primarily a dedicated homemaker in every sense of the word. She turned daily life into an art form through her endless patience, warm hospitality, and deep devotion to her family.

There wasn't a day where you couldn't find Helen reading a book, working on a crossword puzzle, or crocheting an afghan. She was also widely known for taking in a stray animal or two, offering them a safe and loving home. With a great love of sports, she and her husband spent many years managing the Moniuszuko Girls Softball League. She was also a proud member of the Bills Mafia tailgating crew, where she built lasting friendships and countless cherished memories.

Helen was predeceased by the love of her life, Russell C. Falco, whom she married in 1984, and with whom she shared many happy years until his passing on June 28, 2000.

She is survived by her children: Brian Michael, Lisa Ann, and JoieLyn; her cherished grandchildren: Dustin, Dalton, Baileigh, and Brandon; and her great-granddaughter, Kylie. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Daniel (Mary Lynn) Houghtaling of Dover, Delaware, and her sister, Mary Lou (Gary) Schulenberg of Westfield, NY, as well as affectionately being known as "Aunt Hen" to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Services 10-11 am Friday, September 25, 2026 at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Ave., Dunkirk with prayer service to follow.
