Eugenie M. Briggs, age 88, of Fredonia passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Buffalo General Hospital after an extended illness. She was the daughter of Clay and Alice Buenzli.
Janie graduated from Olympia High School, Olympia, WN class of 1956. After high school she worked as a civilian employee for the Department of the Army at Ft. Lewis, WN. It was there she met her husband, Peter, who was serving in the US Army. In 1962 she and her young family moved to Dunkirk where her family grew primarily in the "big" house on Central Avenue. Janie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed. Not only was she a devoted mother to her own children but was a mentor to several of her children's friends.
After retirement she and Peter enjoyed spending many winter's at their vacation home in Lakeland, FL.
She is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, Peter; 6 children; Julie Briggs Edwards of Fredonia, Kathryn (Anthony) D'Aurizio of Huntersville, NC, Amy Briggs of Huntersville, NC, John (Yuki) Briggs of San Francisco, CA, Beth (Willie) Ray of Fredonia, and Susan (Michael) Campese of Port Charlotte, FL, 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mary Wallace, and two brothers, Robert and James Buenzli.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her son, Daniel Briggs and a brother, John Buenzli.
The family will receive friends at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY, from 3 to 6 pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church; 1032 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026 with a luncheon to follow at Shorewood Country Club; 4958 W Lake Rd, Dunkirk, NY
