David F. Michalak, 80, of Dunkirk, passed away at home Tuesday evening, March 17, 2026. Born in Dunkirk on June 29, 1945, he was the husband of Carol (Dudek) Michalak and son of the late Francis and Helen (Somerfeldt) Michalak.
A lifelong resident of Dunkirk, David was a proud graduate of Dunkirk High School. Following high school, he joined the United States Navy in 1963. He served two years of active duty followed by several years in the Naval Reserves until 1968.
David dedicated 35 years as a Shipping Clerk for Al-Tech Specialty Steel until its closing. Following his time at Al-Tech, he spent several years working at Dunkirk Radiator.
Known for his humor and generosity, David was the life of any gathering. He would go to great lengths to ensure everyone around him was laughing and enjoying themselves. A gracious host, he delighted in cooking for family, friends, and neighbors, often organizing neighborhood parties.
He enjoyed a variety of hobbies that include hunting, fishing, vegetable gardening, archery, and reading.
Memberships include the First Ward Falcon Club and Fourth Ward Falcon Club.
David is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carol (Dudek) Michalak, whom he married on October 25, 1969; loving children Daniel (Jodi Parker) Michalak and Katherine (Jason Habich) Michalak; grandchildren Paige Perry, Jenna Michalak and Ryan Michalak; siblings Gary (Roxanne) Michalak and Lynn (Richard) Staszak; sister-in-law Christine (Harry) O'Hara, and brother-in-laws Charles (Mary) Dudek, Joseph (Christine) Dudek, and Michael (Nancy) Dudek. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his beloved Canine companion, Molly.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son Timothy Michalak; SFC, US Army, and his father and mother-in-law Stanley and Ann Dudek.
Relatives and friends are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Saturday, March 28, 2026 from 11-1 p.m. at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY. Prayer services will begin at 1 p.m. with Military Honors immediately following held by the Dunkirk Joint Veteran Council. Interment will be held in private. Arrangements are by R. Michael Mackowiak III; McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
