Alfred W. Meyers

He died unexpectedly on June 25, 2023 at Brooks Memorial Hospital. He was 96 years old.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Mable Meyers; and his brothers, Fred Meyers, and Robert Meyers.

The family will be having a memorial service for Alfred W. Meyers at the Willowbrook Park Cemetery, Monday July 3, 2023 at 10.00 a.m.. His brother, Reverend Kenneth Meyers will be officiating the ceremony. Donations may go to the Veterans of Affairs.

Alfred was an agenda driven man. He joined the Navy at 17, he went into active service April 4, 1945. He served aboard several vessels, USS Hamul, USS Alcor, USS Cascade. The USS Hamul (AD-20) reached Okinawa on 10 May 1945 and remained there until February 1946 to repair battle-damaged ships. Alfred also served on Commander Division 104 FA USS ADL 26 and was ranked Fireman Second Class as he served our country in World War II. He received three medals, the Asiatic Pacific Metal, American Theater Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was a proud World War II Veteran.

After his service with the Navy, he was a mechanic for many years at Kraft foods in Dunkirk N.Y. He served his community as a fireman for Murray Hose 4 in Dunkirk, and Fire Chief at the East Town Hall of Dunkirk. He served over thirty years of service as fireman. He also worked as a school bus driver.

Alfred first marriage was to Louise Meyers, they had six children together, they later divorced. The surviving children are Linda Valentine, Jimmy Meyers, Debbie Noto, Cheryl Sior, William Meyers, and Pamela Ragnere. All the children have married, and he has 13 grandchildren he would be proud of. He was very close to his brother, Robert “Bob” Meyers and his nephew, Scott Meyers.

Alfred loved animals. He had many pets over the years, he liked to feed the birds, and ride his horses. His favorite Horse was Smoky, and he had him tattooed on his arm. Alfred enjoyed working with his hands, he built many small sheds and building, he always loved a mental challenge. He loved how mechanical things worked. He was a very “on Time” man. Over 96 years Alfred lived his life with a “No Quit” attitude. He always looked for the answer to a problem and didn’t quit until they were solved. His favorite phrases were “it’s a simple as ABC, 1,2,3” and “What’s Cooking”. His Nicknames were Whitey, Ruffy and Otisy.

Alfred W. Meyers should be remembered as a servant to his community and a true patriot.
